Veteran track and field coach, Casey Thom is now in his eighth season as an assistant coach with the Rice Owls men's track and field team. He works with the horizontal jumpers, hurdlers, throwers and multi-event athletes in addition to coordinating recruiting and handling meet operations.

Thom made an immediate impact on the success of the Owls. During the 2007 outdoor season, Thom coached Luke Stadel to the Conference USA shot put crown and qualified for the NCAA championship. Philip Adam added his name to the Rice record books during the indoor season, setting the school record in the heptathlon.

In his tenure at Rice, Thom guided decathlete Philip Adam to 3 NCAA appearances in the decathlon from 2009-2011. Adam earned All-America status in 2010 when he placed 9th at the NCAA Outdoor championship In 2011 he won his 3rd consecutive conference championship in the decathlon with a personal best score of 7514. He was named the NCAA Elite-88 award winner for having the highest GPA of any athlete to participate in the NCAA Finals.

In 2012, Thom's athletes continued to dominate the combined events at the C-USA championships sweeping the indoor medals, and leading Clayton Chaney to the outdoor title, the fourth consecutive decathlon title for the Owls. Chaney also qualified for the NCAA Championships and earned 2nd team All-American honors.

Thom also planned and conducted physical training for two time NCAA champion Jason Colwick. In his time at Rice, Thom has coached athletes responsible for 16 C-USA event championships,18 individuals who qualified for post season competition, 3 athletes responsible for 6 NCAA All-American honors, 5 individuals who were named Academic All-American, and one National Champion.

Prior to his arrival at Rice, Thom served coaching stints at Tulane and UCLA. In 2005, he guided Nastassja Hall to a Brazilian under-23 national record in the heptathlon. He also assisted in the development of South Korean pole vault record-holder and Olympian Yoo Kim.

Thom was a stand-out decathlete at Nebraska, with a personal best of 7,522 points. In 2003, he earned All-America honors in the decathlon. Thom received his bachelor's degree in classics from Nebraska (2003), and he also has a master's degree in sport coaching from the United States Sports Academy.

Thom has continued to develop his knowledge and has earned many advanced certifications including (CSCS) from the National Strength and Condition Coaches Association, and USATF Level II certifications in the sprints and hurdles, throws, jumps, multi-events coach, and endurance areas He is also a member of the prestigious GAIN network.

Thom has been very active in coaching education. He is a certified coaching education instructor, and continues to plan and produce coaching education events in the Houston area. He has also published 2 articles, and has spoke at the Louisiana, Kentucky, and Nebraska coaches' clinics.

Thom lives in Missouri City with his wife Savara.
