Tommy Bennett and the doubles team of David Warren and Zachary Yablon shook of shaky starts to grind out first day victories in the main draw of the Turkish Airlines $15,000 Futures of Houston, which is being held at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on the campus of Rice University.
Two other members of the Rice men's team, Adam Gustafsson and Srikar Alla will open singles play on Wednesday.
Bennett advanced to the round of 16 in singles with a three-set victory over Bernard Wezeman of the Netherlands. Weseman raced to 6-2 win in the first set, but Bennett evened the match by winning a tie breaker in the second set then captured the match with a 6-4 win in the third.
Freshmen Warren and Yablon found themselves in a deep early hole in the first set, but rebounded to take the first set in a tie break and then closed out the match against.Felipe Rios and Robert Verzaal 6-4 in the second set.
Warrem and Yablon will be back in action on Wednesday when they face Rifat Biktyakov of Uzbekistan and Jakob Sude of Germany, who upset the tournament's second seed in their opening match. Bennett will next play on Thursday when he faces Tyler Hochwalt, the tournament's eight seed.
Gustafsson will face former Texas A&M star Jeff Dadamo while Alla, who reached the main draw through the qualifying round, will meet the tourney's top seed, former Texas Longhorn Edward Corrie.
First serves are set for 10 a.m. at Jake Hess. Both Rice singles matches are the second matches of the day, while Warren/Yablon are the third scheduled match the Jake Hess Stadium court.
