IRVING, Tex. -- The Rice men's basketball, men's tennis, and women's track & field teams all earned the Conference USA Sport Academic Award for maintaining the league's highest grade point average in that respective sport during the 2011-12 academic year, the C-USA office announced Monday (July 20) from its headquarters in Irving, Tex.
The Owls' men's basketball squad was a repeat-winner for the C-USA academic award after maintaining a cumulative 3.166 team GPA. Under the direction of head coach Ben Braun Rice finished with a total of 19 wins, including two in national postseason play.
Rice's men's tennis team posted a 3.496 GPA that was the best among C-USA teams. Hall of Fame head coach Ron Smarr guided the Owls 18-9 dual match record and a Top 50 national ranking in his final season.
No less than 47 student-athletes on Rice's women's track & field team combined to finish with a league-leading 3.382 GPA. Head coach Jim Bevan, who completed his 26th season coaching at Rice, trained a host of NCAA individual qualifiers and Owls who participated in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.
Rice was one of four C-USA institutions where all the student-athletes combined for a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. The following is a list of the C-USA's academic team award honorees in the sports in which Rice competes:
