Rice senior Sam Garforth-Bles, who energized the Owls lineup after his move into the top spot in the singles lineup, has been named to the 2012 All Conference USA Men's Tennis first team in a vote of league coaches. Rice's Christian Saravia and Justin To were named to the league's second team in doubles.
Garforth-Bles finished his senior year with a 16-8 record, matching Michael Nuesslein for the team lead. He moved into the No. 1 singles position midway through the year and posted an 8-6 record while facing the top player from each opponent. He was 4-2 against C-USA opponents, including a 3-1 mark during the regular season. All four of those matches went the full three sets, including wins against Memphis and Tulane at the Rice Invitational that earned him C-USA Male Tennis Athlete of the Week.
Garforth-Bles and Tulsa's Clifford Marsland were the only tennis players to earn first team All C-USA Tennis honors both on the court and in the classroom. They were named to the Conference USA Men's Tennis All-Academic Team in April.
