Freshman recruit for 2014-15
April 23, 2014
Rice head men's tennis coach Efe Ustundag announced Wednesday the signing of Jamie Malik from Maidenhead, England to join the Owls for the start of the 2014-15 college tennis season.
"We're very excited that Jamie decided that Rice was where he wanted to advance his tennis career and continue his education," Ustundag said. "He will be an excellent addition to our lineup and is excited to join Tommy Bennett, who attended the same school (Reed's School) and get to work. He took some time off to concentrate on his academics, but last week he won an ITF Grade Four tournament in both singles and doubles and is off to another good start this week. He has a very aggressive schedule this summer which will be perfect preparation for our fall season."
Malik has a current ITF Junior ranking of 208 after reaching a high of 167 after reaching the round of 16 at the Czech International Junior Indoor Championships in January. He returned to action last weekend at the Nike International in Nottingham last week and won both the singles and doubles titles. He is the top seed in this week's Nike event in Nottingham and opened with a win on Tuesday.
