Rice senior Tommy Bennett has been named to the 2017 InTouch Credit Union C-USA All-Academic Tennis Team in a vote by the conference’s sports information directors.

Bennett was honored for the third time in his career and he joins with Rice women’s tennis players Lindsey Hodge and Katherine Ip to give the Owls three representatives on the team, the most for any school in the conference.

A senior from Lewes, England, Bennett carries a 3.672 GPA as an Economics major in addition to a Business minor. He joins Julie Chao (2008-10) as the only Rice tennis players to be named to the All-Academic team for three years. He is a three-time Rice University Scholar Athlete Award and also served as a RIce University Peer Academic Advisor for three years.

On the court, Bennett has won a combined 77 dual matches between singles and doubles in his career and is currently ranked 63rd in doubles with fellow senior David Warren. Last year, the duo became Rice’s first doubles qualifiers for the NCAA Championship since 2008 and this fall they capture the consolation championship at the 2016 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championship which earned them a berth in the ITA Indoor National Intercollegiate Championship.

Bennett and the Rice men’s team will open the defense of the Conference USA title on Friday in Murfreesboro, Tennessee when they face UTSA at 2 p.m.
