As they complete preparations for their final Conference USA Men's Tennis Championships this weekend, a pair of Rice seniors have been honored for their achievements in the classroom.
Sam Garforth-Bles and Michael Nuesslein have been named to the 2012 Conference USA Men's Tennis All-Academic Team. Due to a tie, there were six men voted onto the teams by the league's sports information directors for the sport. Honorees must hold a minimum 3.2 GPA and have competed in at least 75 percent of their team's scheduled matches. All six of this year's selections boast academic marks better than 3.50.
Garforth-Bles has fashioned a 15-7 record as a senior, including a 7-5 mark since moving into the No. 1 spot in the Owls' lineup. He was named the league's Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week after running the table in three matches during the Rice Invitational in late March. He holds a 3.68 GPA while majoring in philosophy and is a four-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor roll and a Rice Honor Athlete.
Nuesslein, who has a 3.79 GPA with a double major in Economics and Sports Management as well as a Business minor, leads the team with a 16-6 dual record this season. He ran off a streak of 11 consecutive wins during the season. He is a three-time winner of the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal and a 2012 Rice Honor Athlete.
The 47th ranked Owls will open play in the 2012 C-USA Championships on Friday afternoon when they meet SMU at 4 p.m. (central) at the UCF Tennis Complex in Orlando, Florida.
