The Rice men’s tennis team opens a weekend slate of action in West Texas on Friday when the Owls take on Abilene Christian at 11:44 a.m. on Friday. Rice will wrap up the weekend by facing No. 31 Texas Tech in Lubbock on Sunday.
The Owls (4-7) are coming off a 4-3 loss to Middle Tennessee State in their Conference USA opener on Wednesday. The Owls battled back to tie the match after falling behind 3-0, but the Blue Raiders held off the Owls final hope for a win with a three-set win on court three.
ACU is 9-7 this year and the Wildcats are coming off a 6-1 win at Nicholls on Monday.
Redshirt sophomore Eric Rutledge extended his unblemished record at the top of the Rice lineup to 8-0 overall and 7-0 at the first position in the lineup with a straight set win against Middle Tennessee. Freshman MMohamed Abdel-Aziz has won his last two singles matches to improve to 5-4 this season, matching fellow freshman Jacob Eskeland for second on the team in dual singles.
This will mark the first time Rice and ACU have met in Abilene. Rice has won each of the previous 14 meetings, 11 at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium and the last three at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
