The Rice men’s tennis team makes a brief stop at home on Wednesday to open Conference USA play by Middle Tennessee at 4 p.m. at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Rice enters the midweek matchup at 4-6 on the year, including a 3-2 mark at the GRBTC. Wednesday’s match breaks a streak of five consecutive matches on the road for the Owls. The Blue Raiders are coming in with a 10-2 mark after downing Wisconsin 4-3 on Sunday.
This will mark the ninth meeting overall between the two schools, the second as members of Conference USA and the first in Houston since 2008. Rice holds a 5-3 advantage in the season series and has won the last four meetings.
The last two contests came at the Conference USA Championship. The Owls defeated the host Blue Raiders 4-2 in the semifinals last year to advance to face Old Dominion in the title match and went on to capture The Owls took the last meeting between the two schools in Houston, taking a 4-0 win during the 2008 Rice Invitational.
While this is the first meeting between the two schools on the Rice campus since 2008, the Blue Raiders own a 1-1 record at GRBTC, with both matches coming during the e 2016 C-USA Championship. They will be back in Houston at the end of the April as the Owls host the 2018 conference championship.
The Owls will be back on the road this weekend, with matches set for Abilene Christian on Friday and No. 31 Texas Tech on Sunday.
