Eric Rutledge has been named the Conference USA Male Tennis Athlete of the Week for the period ending February 12, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
Rutledge picked up his first career dual win over a ranked opponent on Friday and came back on Sunday to fight off the efforts of a first set loss to dominate in the last two sets and complete an unbeaten weekend in singles for the Owls who split road contests with Princeton (4-3 loss) and Penn (6-1 win).
On Friday, Rutledge fought back to post a three-set win over Princeton’s 101st ranked Payton Holden to hand him his first loss of the dual season. On Sunday, after opening with a swift 6-1 win with Jake Hansen in doubles to lead the Owls to their seventh doubles point in nine matches, he rebounded from a 7-5 loss in the first set to dominate Gabriel Rapport 6-1, 6-1 in the final two to pick up the win.
This is Rutledge’s first career weekly honor from the conference. The transfer from Wake Forest has posted a 6-2 mark in singles and teamed with Hansen for a 5-2 mark in doubles this spring.
Rice will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to Baton Rouge to take on LSU in a 2 p.m. dual.
