Rice redshirt sophomore Eric Rutledge has been named the Conference USA Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for his role in sparking the Owls comeback win over LSU on Sunday.
This is Rutledge’s second weekly honor from C-USA. He was recognized last season after wins at Princeton and Penn.
Rutledge fought back from 0-40 to hold serve early in the third set after dropping the second and went on to down Shane Monroe from LSU 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to draw the Owls even at 3-3 with LSU, setting the stage for Sumit Sarkar’s clinching win on court two moments later.
After playing 20 of 23 matches at either the No. 4 or No. 5 spot in the lineup last season, Rutledge is now 5-0 this year at the top two spots in the singles lineup, including a 4-0 mark at the first position.
Rutledge and his Rice teammates will take to the road for the first time in 2018 this weekend when they travel to Hanover, New Hampshire for duals against Minnesota (Saturday at noon) and Dartmouth (Sunday at 10 a.m.).
