Peter Frank and Leif Berger battled back from first set losses to lead four Rice men's tennis players into the Round of 32 at the USTA-ITA Texas Regional Championships wrapped up at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the campus TCU in Ft. Worth.
"Our guys showed a great deal of resiliency today, fighting off those first set losses and coming back to win," Rice head coach Efe Ustudag said.
Frank dropped his opening set to 12th seeded Harrison Adams of Texas A&M 6-1, then rallied to take the next two sets and the match 7-5, 6-0. Berger dropped his opening set to Tyler Brown of UTSA 6-3, then earned his advancement to the round of 32 with successive 6-4 wins in the last two sets.
The pair will be joined by senior Jonathan Chang and freshman Adam Gustafsson. Chang downed Bruno Snyder of Lamar, 7-5, 6-2, while Gustafsson won a pair of matches on the first day.
Rice freshman Tommy Bennett and junior Philipp Seifert both dropped their opening matches, while each of the Owls three doubles teams also fell in opening matches.
