Oscar Janglin and Eric Rutledge shook off a loss in doubles to pick up wins in singles to highlight action for the Rice men’s tennis team on the first day of action in the 2017 ITA Texas Regional Championships Presented by Oracle in College Station on Friday.
After byes in the first round, Janglin raced past Zane Kohrs of Texas Rio Grande Valley, 6-1, 6-2 and Rutledge dispatched of Carlos Pedrosa Cuevas of Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 6-1, 7-5 to earn a spot in the round of 32 on Saturday at the Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M.
Janglin will face Texas A&M’s Jordi Arconada while Rutledge will meet Constantin Frantzen of Baylor.
Daniel Warren picked up the Owls third win in singles in the day, defeating Gardiner Perotti of SMU, 6-2, 6-3 in the first round before falling to TCU’s Alastair Gray in the second round.
Janglin and Rutledge entered the tournament as the fifth seeds in doubles, but dropped their opener in a tiebreaker to Kai Breitbach and Joao Ceolin of UTSA, 8-7 (7). They advanced in their first consolation match as Pedrosa Cuevas and William Mottet withdrew because of an injury.
Action resumes with doubles play beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Singles play begins at 9.
