The Rice men's tennis team advanced three singles entries as well as three doubles teams in the opening round of action at the Wyndham Houston Medical Center Rice Fall Invitational on Friday. The action was moved to The Downtown Club at The Met after a tropical rain system hit the Houston area.
Adam Gustafsson, Max Andrews and David Warren all won opening matches on Friday against players from SMU. Gustafsson ground out a 7-5, 7-6 win over Alex Sanders of SMU in the A Flight bracket, while true freshmen Andrews and Warren advanced in the B and C Flights.
Andrews edged Mischa Nowicki of SMU 7-5, 7-5 while Warren raced to a 6-2, 6-2 win overEduardo Razzetto.
In doubles, Andrews combined with Srikar Alla, a transfer from Fordham, to defeat Alex and Ian Van Cott of Tulane 8-6, while Warren and fellow freshman Zack Yablon downed Eduardo Razzetto and Julio Olaya in a tiebreaker, 8-7. The team of senior Philipp Seifert and Leif Berger also advance in A Flight doubles thanks to a bye.
Play in the invitational will continue on Saturday at the Met.
