The Rice men's tennis team made a strong run in doubles, but their momentum ran out during singles, dropping a 4-0 decision to the host Memphis Tigers. The loss eliminated the Owls from the C-USA Men's Tennis Championship and ended their season at 11-14.
Efe Ustundag' s Owls made a strong run for the doubles point. After dropping the match on Court Three, the Owls mounted a comeback on the front two courts, as Jonathan Chang and Leif Berger forced a tiebreaker on Court Two while their freshman duo of Tommy Bennett and Adam Gustafsson had tied up the match with the Tigers' 51st tandem of David O'Hare and Joe Salisbury, 6-6.
But with the match's first point hanging in the balance, the Tigers got a late break on Court One and grabbed the first point of the day, leaving the tiebreaker on Court Two unfinished.
In singles, the Tigers did not give the Owls an opening to mount a comeback, grabbing quick victories on Courts Five and Six, then wrapping the match up with a win on Court Six. The Owls top two singles players (Chang and Gustafsson) opened with winning sets, but their final matches were not completed.
Chang concluded his career with a 32-24 singles mark, including a 10-10 record in his first season playing No. 1 singles. Bennett finished with the team leading 14-7 mark in singles, followed by fellow freshman Gustafsson (12-11) and junior Philipp Seifert.
