The Rice Owls accomplished something few visitors can claim on a weekend stay in La Vegas, wrapping up an unbeaten weekend of competition by downing host UNLV, 5-2 at the Fertitta Tennis Center on Saturday.
The 47th ranked Owls won their fifth consecutive match to run their season mark to 13-5, thanks to a strong start in doubles that carried over into singles action.
Rice captured all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the day and then carried that momentum over into singles, winning four of six first sets and then closing out the match by winning three of those matches in straight sets.
Sam Garforth-Bles provided the clinching point with a straight set win at No. 1, raising his season mark at the top spot in the order to 4-2. Christian Saravia, who dropped his opening set to Alex Bull, bounced back to win a tie-break in the second set and take the third, 6-1.
The Owls will continue their travels next weekend with a trip to Dallas that will include a C-USA matchup with SMU on Friday and a matchup with 64th ranked TCU on Sunday.
