The University to San Diego fought off an early upset bid in doubles and then rode that momentum to take a 6-1 win over Rice on Tuesday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center on the USD campus in San Diego.
After the 61st ranked Toreros (4-4) opened the doubles action with an 8-3 win on court three, Rice's Srikar Alla and Leif Berger were locked in a tight battle with USD's 30th ranked duo of Clarke Spinosa and Filip Vittek. Alla and Berger sent their match to a tiebreaker, while on court two, Tommy Bennett and David Warren were trading games with USD's Uros Petronijevic and Geoffrey Fosso. With the match's first point hanging in the balance, Spinosa and Vittek fought off the upset bid to win the tiebreaker 7-4 and give USD a 1-0 lead.
San Diego quickly moved to clinch the match with straight set wins on five of six singles courts. Freshman David Warren picked up the Owls' lone win, grinding out a 7-5, 7-5 win on court five.
The Owls (2-9) will wrap up their West Coast trip on Thursday when they face San Diego State at 4 p.m.
