Gustavo Gonzalez picked up his first dual singles win while Srikar Alla and Max Andrews also picked up wins in singles, but the Rice men's tennis team could not shake off the loss of the doubles point and dropped a 4-3 decision to the St. John's Red Storm on Monday afternoon. The match was played at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in La Jolla, California.
Gonzalez, who teamed with assistant coach Bojan Szumanski to win the 125th Pacific Coast Doubles Championship on Sunday, showed little lingering effects of playing multiple matches one day earlier. He ground out a 7-4 tiebreak win to take the opening set, then closed out the day's scoring with a 6-4 win in the second set against St. John's Gary Kushnirovich.
Alla won his second straight singles match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lucas Hejhal while Andrews outlasted Vaidik Munshaw, 7-5, 6-1.
The Owls will remain be back on the courts on Tuesday when they face 62nd ranked San Diego on Tuesday at 5 p.m. (central). They will wrap up their West Coast slate on Thursday when they take on 64th ranked San Diego State.
