The Rice men's tennis dropped the opening match of their west coast trip on Tuesday, dropping a 7-0 decision to 36th ranked San Diego at the Hogan Tennis Center in San Diego.
The Toreros started quickly, racing out to leads in all three doubles matches, before the Owls mounted a comeback. Rice's No. 3 doubles team of Leif Berger and Jonathan Chang fought back to take a 7-6 lead while the Owls' first two units closed to their deficits to 6-5 before falling.
USD raced to wins in all six singles matches, capturing each in straight sets.
The Owls will remain in San Diego through Sunday. They will face Fresno State in a dual match on Thursday and then open play in the West Coast Doubles Championships in La Jolla.
