The Rice men's tennis team fought of a determined challenge from Louisiana Lafayette to snap a four-match losing streak at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on Saturday.
The Owls (3-6) had not won since a pair of 7-0 wins on January 27, including a pair of tough 4-3 decisions to LSU and TCU last weekend. From the outset on Saturday, it was apparent that the end of their streak would not come easily.
The doubles point was not decided until Leif Berger and Jonathan Chang emerged with a 7-4 win in a tiebreaker and once singles play opened, Louisiana fought back from losses in five first sets to win a pair of three-set matches in addition to a straight set win on Court 5.
Freshman Gustavo Gonzalez upped the Owls' margin to 2-0 with a straight set win on Court 6 and after the Cajuns' win on Court 5, Philipp Seifert and Adam Gustafsson provided the clinching margin with wins on Courts 3 and 2.
The Owls will head west for the remainder of their Spring Break. They will face San Diego and Fresno State in a pair of dual matches in addition to participating in the West Coast Doubles Championship in Lo Jolla, California.
They will be back in action at Jake Hess on March 9 when they host a doubleheader with Abilene Christian and Penn State.
