The Rice men's tennis team took the doubles point to a deciding tiebreaker, but could not sustain that early momentum in singles as 62nd ranked Cornell took a 6-1 decision in a match played at the Combe Tennis Center on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois on Saturday.
Srikar Alla and Leif Berger answered a Cornell win at No. 1 doubles with a 6-3 win at the second position to leave the day's first point up to the outcome of the match between Max Andrews and Adam Gustafsson of Rice and Cornell's Alex Sidney and Bernar Casares Rosa. The Owls duo took a 5-4 lead before Cornell rallied to send the match to a tiebreak. The Big Red prevailed with a 7-4 decision to take a 1-0 lead.
The Owls shuffled their singles lineup, with Tommy Bennett making his first career appearance in the first position and Alla moving into Bennett's second position. Bennett dropped a straight set match to Stefan Vinti while Alla took Casares Rosa to three sets before falling.
Sophomore Adam Gustafsson provided the Owls with their only point of the day, dropping Jason Luu 6-2, 6-5.
They will return to their home courts at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on February 23 when they host Louisiana-Lafayette.
