The Rice men's tennis team opened a two-match road swing on Friday by dropping a 4-0 decision to 30th ranked Northwestern at Combe Tennis Center on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

The Wildcats (5-2) swept to the doubles point with wins on Courts 1 & 2 and then quickly moved to wrap up the match with straight set wins in singles at the first, fifth and sixth positions.

Rice sophomore Tommy Bennett continued his strong spring season, taking a tiebreaker in the first set and an early 1-0 lead in his second set against NU's 114th ranked Sam Shropshire. Bennett has won four of his past five matches including a straight set win last weekend over 39th ranked Malte Stroop of Mississippi State.

Fellow sophomore Adam Gustafsson had moved to a tiebreaker in his first set against Strong Kirchheimer when their match was called after Northwestern clinched the match.

The Owls (2-5) will be back on the Combe courts at 1 p.m. on Saturday, facing 62nd ranked Cornell, the Owls fourth consecutive nationally ranked opponent and the sixth overall in eight matches this year. They will return to their home courts at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on February 23 when they host Louisiana-Lafayette.
