Adam Gustafsson and Zach Yablon won first-set tiebreaks to set the stage for wins in singles but the Texas Tech Red Raiders rode the strength of four singles wins of their own to take a 4-2 decision over Rice on Sunday morning in Lubbock.
Due to snow storms that moved into the area overnight, the Super Sunday match was moved up to a 9 a.m. start and indoors to The Falls Athletic Club. The match order was also reversed with singles played first and Tech made the doubles point unnecessary by reaching four points during singles.
Play began with action in the first four singles pairings. After Tech took a 2-0 lead with wins on courts 4 and 1, Gustafsson scored Rice's first point by downing Tech's Johann Willems 6-5, 6-3. Fellow sophomore Tommy Bennett, making a bid to post a second straight win over a ranked opponent, took the opening set against the Raiders 65th ranked Hugo Dojas , only to see his opponent rally to take the last two sets and extend the lead to 3-1.
After Tech clinched things with a win on court 5, Yablon completed the scoring by making quick work of Tech's Jolan Cailleau 6-5, 6-1.
The Owls will be back on the road next weekend when they travel to Chicago for duals against #29 Northwestern and Cornell.
