Tommy Bennett and Max Andrews each won for the third time on the weekend as the Rice Owls completed play in the UCF Quad Invite by facing off with 39th ranked TCU in a series of tight matches on Sunday at the UCF Tennis Complex in Orlando on Sunday.
Andrews completed an unbeaten weekend by downing Andres Alfonzo 6-2, 6-4 while Bennett defeated Arnau Dachs 6-4, 6-2 to finish the weekend 3-1.
Srikar Alla lost for the first time on the weekend, dropping a tough three-set decision to TCU's Nick Chappell, who entered the weekend ranked 84th in the country. Alla, who was looking to pick up his second win of the weekend over a ranked opponent after downing Indiana's 80th ranked Sven Lalic on Saturday, took the opening set but could not close out Chappell who won 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
"Overall, it was a good weekend for us," Rice head coach Efe Ustundag said. "We were able to get a good number of quality matches and competed well against some solid competition. The highlight was probably our matches against 56th ranked Indiana on Friday, but we had great efforts every day. We played closer to the level of play that we expect of the team and they showed that used the time during the holidays to maintain their level of fitness. We accomplished what we wanted to in order to be prepared to open the dual season with a very tough first weekend," he added.
The Owls will open the 2014 dual season next weekend when they face a pair of nationally ranked opponents. They will host 20th ranked Texas at 6 p.m. on Friday night at the MET in downtown Houston. They open the final year of play at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on Sunday when they host #24 LSU at noon.
