NORMAN, Okla. – Rice University men’s golf earned the Team Academic Award presented by Farmers Insurance for 2012-13 from the Golf Coaches Association of America, the organization announced on Wednesday.
To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors a college or university must submit the grade point averages for each player on its official squad list for the academic year and achieve a 3.0 or better as a team.
Rice is one of 79 NCAA Division I teams on the list and one of two 2012-13 Conference USA squads to be honored, joining East Carolina. League newcomer Middle Tennessee also earned the award. Rice is one of four teams in the state of Texas to be honored and it is the second-straight year for the Owls to win the award.
The award continues a streak of academic success for Rice under head coach Justin Emil, as the golfers earned an NCAA Public Recognition Award last month, and just two weeks ago, Landon Michelson was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.
Several Owls have had success in amateur events this summer, and the program tees off the 2013-14 campaign on Sept. 9-10 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg, Miss.
