GCAA Team Academic Awards

NORMAN, Okla. – Adding to the team’s recent Conference USA Sport Academic Award and individual All-America Scholar accolades, Rice University men’s golf earned All-Academic Team honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America presented by Farmers Insurance, the organization announced on Wednesday.

The reigning Conference USA champions took home the C-USA Sport Academic Award on Monday with a 3.439 grade point average under the direction of head coach and 2014 C-USA Coach of the Year Justin Emil. In addition to winning the program's first C-USA Championship this season, Rice placed nine golfers on the Commissioner's Honor Roll this spring, with Trey Johnson and Paul Saad claiming C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medals. Tommy Economou and Landon Michelson were also named GCAA Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars last week.

From C-USA, East Carolina and Middle Tennessee also posted grade point averages at 3.0 or better to earn the honor. Rice narrowly missed out on earning GCAA President’s Special Recognition, given to the 11 NCAA Division I golf teams with a 3.5 or higher GPA. DePaul was named the Academic National Champion.

Rice opens its 2014-15 slate on Sept. 8-9 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg, Miss.
