HARMONY, Fla. - Incoming freshman Kevin Reilly qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship by virtue of his stellar 64-72--136 (-8) in the qualifying rounds at Harmony Golf Preserve this week.
The 2013 U.S. Amateur Championship runs from August 12-18 at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
On the accomplishment, head coach Justin Emil noted, "I am very excited for Kevin. He has been working hard this summer and has played consistently well in several tournaments leading into the U.S. Amateur qualifier. Kevin has plenty of USGA tournament experience and with the way he is playing right now he could easily make a statement at the Country Club at Brookline. It's pretty special for him to play in a U.S. Amateur during the centennial of Francis Ouimet's historic win as an amateur in the 1913 U.S. Open at Brookline."
The Oviedo, Fla. native claimed second place overall in the field of 64 golfers at the qualifier, just one stroke behind medalist Joey Petronio, who enters the fall as a junior for North Florida. LSU's Curtis Thompson carded a 137 to earn first alternate.
Reilly played for coach Brandi Malkovich at Paul J. Hagerty High School and led the team to a second Seminole Athletic Conference title as a senior, posting a 68 at the championship tournament and a 36.5 stroke average (per nine holes) for the season. He earned all-conference honors three times and reached regional with the team in each of his four years. Most recently, he claimed the title at last weekend's Florida Junior Tour event at Lake Wales Country Club with a 138 (-6).
Academically, Reilly was named to the school's honor roll all four years, and was a High Honors recipient for posting a 4.0 grade point average throughout high school. Additionally, the son of Tim and Debra Reilly was named Hagerty's Wendy's High School Heisman winner and is an active member of the National Honor Society as well as the National Technical Honor Society.
Reilly's achievement is just the latest in a strong summer for the Owls. Classmate Alex Levy recently claimed third place at the Firecracker tournament in Austin with a 63-68-70--201 (-12).
Landon Michelson notched an 11th place finish at the Magnolia Amateur with a 71-71-73--215 (+2) and senior Jeff Wibawa qualified for the Southern Amateur at The Club at Carlton Woods in the Woodlands, which runs from July 17-20.
