HOUSTON – Head Rice University men’s golf coach Justin Emil announced the squad’s 2013-14 schedule on Monday, which includes four fall tournaments and six spring events leading up to April’s Conference USA Championship.
The Owls will revisit seven tournaments or courses from the 2012-13 season, including the 14th annual Rice Intercollegiate at Westwood Golf Club and the second annual Bayou City Collegiate Championship at Redstone Golf Club.
The season begins on Sept. 9-10 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Owls claimed fourth place at the tournament to open the 2012-13 campaign at Hattiesburg Country Club behind 29th place finishes from Joe Beck III and James Lee, who made his collegiate debut at the event.
The Owls then head west for the 2013 Ram Masters Invitational at Colorado State’s Fort Collins country Club. The two-day event begins on Sept. 16. Wichita State claimed victory in the inaugural tournament last season.
After a short break, Rice takes on a perennially tough field at LSU’s David Toms Intercollegiate on Oct. 5-6 at Baton Rouge’s University Club.
The fall’s final event is The Invitational at the Ocean Course, hosted by College of Charleston on Kiawah Island, S.C. The three-day competition tees off on Oct. 27.
After nearly four months off the course, the Owls begin the spring at their home course for the Rice Intercollegiate on Feb. 17-18. Rice tied for third place last season in the team’s best finish of the year.
Just days later, the Owls head to Humble’s Redstone Golf Club to co-host the Bayou City Collegiate Championship with Houston. Then a freshman, Lee led the Owls in 39th place as the squad finished 15th overall last season.
Rice returns to Louisiana two weeks later for the Argent Financial Intercollegiate at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, where the squad claimed ninth at a tournament last fall. The event is slated for March 3-4.
The following week, the Owls return to the west coast for the Bandon Dunes Invitational. The March 9-11 event is played in Bandon, Ore. on the Pacific Dunes course.
On March 24-25, Rice takes on the Lone Star Invitational at San Antonio’s Briggs Ranch Golf Club, where the team placed ninth a season ago in a fall competition. Jeff Wibawa paced the Owls with a 12th-place finish last season after claiming the individual medal in 2011.
The team’s final tune-up for the C-USA Championship is Vanderbilt’s Mason Rudolph Championship at Franklin, Tenn.’s Legends Club, April 4-6. Rice claimed 13th at the event last season, led by Beck’s 20th-place performance.
The season comes to a head at the Conference USA Championship tournament on April 20-22, held once again at Texarkana Country Club in southwest Arkansas. The Owls placed 11th at the 2013 edition.
Despite the graduation of senior leader Brock Wilson, the Owls return their top four stroke average leaders from last season.
