HOUSTON - Head Rice University men's golf coach Justin Emil announced "An Evening With Champions - Past, Present and Future," a dinner and auction benefitting the program on Oct. 22 at River Oaks Country Club. PGA golfers Mark O'Meara and Lanny Wadkins as well as Golf Channel analyst Tim Rosaforte will headline the evening's proceedings as guest speakers.
The event is the first for a new golf support organization, FORGE (Friends of Rice Golf Excellence), as Emil aims to `forge' a path to success for the program to reach its potential as a national contender on the course.
Reservations for the event are available from event sponsorship and VIP tables with special guests to individual dinner tickets, which include a pre-dinner cocktail hour with the guest speakers.
"Just as Rice University has an overall vision for its second century, the Rice golf program has its own vision of a successful future - producing NCAA All-Americans, developing PGA Tour players, and ultimately winning conference and NCAA Championships," said Emil. "To achieve these goals, we must provide our scholar-athletes with the tools they need to be successful, while continuing to attract future standout prospects on the golf course and in the classroom."
"Today, recruiting for golf at the collegiate level is highly competitive. While Rice is an institution that is appealing to prospects across the nation and world, we need to cast a wider net in attracting and recruiting top golfers."
Emil will join Joe Pogge on Saturday morning at 7:45 a.m. on SportsRadio 610's Smokin' Joes Driving Range Show to discuss the upcoming event as well as what to look for from Rice Golf in the upcoming season.
O'Meara has won 34 professional tournaments since 1980, including the 1998 Masters and The Open Championships. The 1998 PGA Player of the Year is currently on the Champions Tour.
Wadkins boasts 31 professional tournament victories, including the 1977 PGA Championship. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame and currently plays on the Champions Tour.
Rosaforte joined the Golf Channel as an analyst in 2007. The senior writer at Golf World Magazine has published three books, including Raising the Bar: The Championship Years of Tiger Woods; Heartbreak Hill: The Anatomy of a Ryder Cup; and Tiger Woods: The Making of a Champion. Rosaforte has covered the Ryder Cup for 30 years during his illustrious career in journalism.
