Whitehead Moves on in U.S. Open Qualifying
Rice golfer finishes third at U.S. Open Local Qualifier

Rice junior golfer Michael Whitehead began his week by firing a five-under par 67 at Lakeside Country Club on Monday to tie for third at a U.S. Open local-qualifying tournament and advance to sectional play. The qualifier attracted a field of 122 golfers.
After moving on in qualifying for the U.S. Open, Whitehead returns to playing as a member of a team this week as the Owls travel to the NCAA College Station Regional being played Thursday through Saturday.
On Monday, the top eight qualifiers at Lakeside Country Club advance to the U.S. Open Sectionals. Whitehead will compete at the Sectional played June 7 at the Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands. At the 36-hole event, Whitehead will vie for a spot in the field at the 2010 U.S. Open slated to be played June 14-20 at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Whitehead leads Rice with a73.47 strokes per round average as well as nine, Top 20 finishes this season. He won the Texas Golf Association's South Amateur Championship for the second time in three years last August. He began 2010 by winning the Houston Golf Association's Collegiate Match Play Championship.
