Westwood Qualifying Results

HOUSTON — Rice golfer Jay Burlison fired a three-under 69 on Monday in the U.S. Open local qualifier at Westwood Golf Club in Houston. The sophomore tied for third in the field of more than 100 golfers to move on to the sectional round on June 6 at Lakeside Country Club in Houston.

Nearly 10,000 golfers began the qualifying process, which helps determine the field of 156 to compete in the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa., on June 16-19. Twelve sites host sectional play, which consists of 36 holes.

In his first year on South Main, Burlison had a 77.31 stroke average in 16 rounds. He was the team’s top finisher twice, including a second-place finish at the President’s Day Challenge. The Salinas, Calif., native notched his low round (69) in the final round of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate where he led the Owls, tying for 36th-place.

Former Owl Jeff Wibawa (71 - -1) and current Owls Mario Carmona (71- -1), James Lee (78 - +6) also participated but failed to qualify.
