HOUSTON—Rice men’s golf coach Justin Emil has announced the signing of Mason Weld for the 2017-18 school year, Tuesday afternoon. Weld transfers to Rice after playing the last two years at Sam Houston State.
“I’m excited that Mason will be joining us this fall,” said Emil. “He’s an outstanding young man with high character, work ethic, maturity, academic prowess and a solid golf game. He is a perfect fit for our program and will make an immediate impact on our team.”
Weld, from Helotes, Texas, averaged 73.36 strokes per round last year in four tournaments. He recorded three top 25 finishes, including a tie for 17th-place at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate. Weld fired four rounds of par or better, including three rounds in the 60’s. He shot a season-low 68 at the Hartford Hawk Invitational.
As a freshman, Weld was named Third Team All-Southland Conference. He participated in every event, averaging 73.97 strokes per round while adding six rounds of par or better. Weld recorded his first career top-10 finish at the Border Olympics, tying for sixth place with round of 70-69. He also tied for 14th-place at the UTSA/Oak Hills Invitational with rounds of 76-73-71.
While at Brandies High School, Weld was a four-time First Team All-District 27 5A. He was selected to the 5A All-Area Team and Super Team by the San Antonio Express News. He was the Region IV 5A champion in 2014 and tied for ninth-place at the UIL 6A State championship in 2015. Weld had six top-15 American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) finishes, including medalist honors at the 2015 AJGA David Toms Shreveport Championship.
