BANDON, Ore. – Rice University golf takes on the west coast on March 9-11 when it competes at the Bandon Dunes Championship at Pacific Dunes Course, which was recently rated as top resort course by Golfweek magazine.
The Owls have finished in the top 10 in all three spring tournaments so far, including the recent Argent Financial Classic in Choudrant, La., which was distinguished by the cold weather. Rice hopes to see a more temperate climate for this weekend’s event, located along Oregon’s coastline.
Teams participating in the 2014 Bandon Dunes Championship are: Boston College, defending champion Colorado, host Gonzaga, Missouri, Oregon, Pacific, Rice, Saint Mary’s College, San Jose State, UC Davis, Missouri-Kansas City, Utah Valley, Washington, Washington State and Weber State.
Among the field, Rice has only faced Gonzaga during the 2013-14 campaign as the Bulldogs played in the Rice Intercollegiate last month.
Oregon native Trey Johnson (Tualatin) will compete as an individual for the Owls in his home state. The sophomore has played in four tournaments this season.
Four of the top five finishers from this week’s tournament in Louisiana will make the trip as part of the lineup as the Owls send Kevin Reilly, Joe Beck III, Tommy Economou, James Lee and Landon Michelson to the event on the par-71, 6,603-yard course.
Now in its fifth year, the tournament returns to the Pacific Dunes course for the first time since the inaugural event in 2010. The championship rotates through the resort’s four courses.
The teams will play one round each day for a total of 54 holes.
