GULF SHORES, Ala. - In the final competition of the fall, Rice University golf posted its best finish since the 2010-11 campaign, taking home eighth place at the ASU Fall Beach Classic. The Owls carded a 308-297-313-918 (+54) at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club.
Joe Beck III claimed the first top-10 finish of his collegiate career with a 77-73-73-223 (+7) to tie for ninth place. The sophomore led the Owls in scoring three times in the five tournaments in which he competed this semester.
Senior Brock Wilson made a move into second for the Owls and 35th overall with a 79-73-78-230 (+14). His second-round 73 was just one stroke shy of his season-best round, and the event marks his second in a row to place second for Rice.
Jeff Wibawa started strong at the event and claimed eighth place following Monday's opening round, but the junior slid back a bit to a tie for 38th place at 73-76-83-232 (+16). The uncharacteristic third-round score was five strokes higher than any of his first 11 rounds of the season, as he entered the day with a team-best 73.36 stroke average.
Nationally ranked Vanderbilt pulled out the win at 882 (+18), nine strokes ahead of Murray State and Arkansas-Little Rock. Host Arkansas State finished in ninth, two strokes behind the Owls.
UALR's Alfred Kerstis tied with Troy's Tolver Dozier for the individual medal at 214 (-2) on the challenging 7,165-yard par-72 course.
Rice's previous best finish of the season was ninth place, which the team had claimed in each of its last two outings of the fall.
The Owls return to competition on Feb. 4-5, 2013 for the Rice Intercollegiate. Rice then plays four other tournaments as it prepares for the Conference USA Championship in Texarkana, Ark. on April 21-23.
