Missouri City, Texas - Four Rice University golfers opened the HBU Husky Invitational on Monday with 36 holes at Quail Valley Golf Club. Competing individually, the Owls posted a strong showing in the event's first two rounds.
Brandon Burke paced the group with a 78-72-150 (+8) to end the day in 25th place. The tournament is his second with the Blue and Gray after transferring to Rice from Iowa State for his senior campaign.
After pulling out of last week's Lone Star Invitational due to illness, Ryan Benevides bounced back well with a 76-83-159 (+17) to tie for 45th. His opening round 76 was the sophomore's lowest of the fall.
In his second competition of the season, Tommy Economou followed closely behind in 47th place with an 81-79-160 (+18).
Trey Johnson also returned to action for his second tournament of the fall and shot an 82-79-161 (+19) to tie for 49th place.
Host Houston Baptist leads the eight-team field with a 570 (+2), 11 strokes ahead of Sam Houston State and Florida Atlantic. FAU's Clint Wilhelm holds the individual lead at 138 (-4).
The tournament wraps up with Tuesday's final round at the venerable Houston-area course.
