Hattiesburg, Miss. -- Rice is tied for seventh-place at the season-opening Sam Hall Intercollegiate, played at the par-72, 6,902 yard Hattiesburg Country Club.
"The wind was up today and made it a challenge for us," said head coach Justin Emil. "We had a poor putting performance today overall. It was good to see Mitchell get it going this afternoon. He really stepped up for us when we needed it."
Senior Mitchell Meissner is tied for 13th-place at one-over par. He opened with a 75 before firing a three-under par 68 in the second round. The 68 is his 22nd career round of par or better and his seventh round in the 60's.
Freshman Rishi Kejriwal, playing in his first career tournament, shot 76-73 to sit in a 39th-place tie at seven-over par. Junior Grant Rogers and freshman Jake Benson, playing in his first career tournament, are tied for 59th-place at 13-over par. Rogers carded rounds of 77-78 and Benson posted an 81-74.
Southern Miss leads the tournament at four-under par, four strokes in front of UTSA. Southern Miss' Matt Codd leads the tournament at three-under par, one stroke in front of teammate Derick Kelting.
The final round begins tomorrow with Rice teeing off at 9:21 a.m. The Owls are paired with South Alabama and Mercer.
