RALEIGH, N.C. – The Rice men’s golf team was only nine holes into the 2014 Raleigh NCAA Regional when torrential rains suspended play at the par-71 Lonnie Poole Golf Course on Thursday morning.
The Owls, who opened on the back nine, stand in 13th position at (+8) and will resume play on the front nine on Friday morning.
“The guys didn’t get off to a great start today, but there is a lot of golf left to play,” Rice head coach Justin Emil said.
Junior Tommy Economou is at par through nine and is tied for 26th overall. He had three birdies, including a birdie on his last hole of the day.
Freshman Kevin Reilly has two bogies through ten holes to leave him tied for 55th overall at (+2).
Senior Landon Michelson is also tied for 55th overall with Reilly at (+2) through ten holes. He so far has one birdie on the day.
James Lee is at (+4), tied for 69th, through eleven holes. The sophomore has had three birdies on the day.
Freshman Alex Levy is tied with Lee for 69th overall at (+4). Levy has one birdie on the day.
No. 5 Georgia Tech leads the group of thirteen at (-14) trailed by No. 8 Washington by four strokes. Both teams are almost finished with their rounds.
Georgia Tech’s Richy Werenski leads the individuals at (-5) with one hole to play, one stroke ahead of his teammate Bo Andrews at (-4) in second place.
After the Owls finish their first round tomorrow afternoon, they will have a thirty minute break before heading back onto the course to start round two. The Owls will play with their same pairing of Memphis and Minnesota tomorrow in the second round.
