BRYAN, Texas -- Senior Mitchell Meissner carded a one-under 71 to sit in a 12th-place tie after the first round of the NCAA Bryan Regional, played at the par-72, 7,121-yard Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
Meissner's 71 is his 18th round of par or better this year and the 39th of his career. Senior Mario Carmona is tied for 22nd-place, posting a one-over par 73.
Meissner began the day drilling a 30-foot putt for birdie on the first hole after initially putting his tee shot into the fairway bunker. The San Antonio native bogeyed three, but came right back with birdies on holes five and eight to move to two-under.
However, Meissner bogeyed the ninth hole. He then birdied the 13th but bogeyed the 14th before finishing the round with four straight pars.
After lipping out a birdie on the first hole, Carmona got one to drop on the second. Three holes later, he moved to two-under par with a birdie on the fifth. The Houston native then parred the next seven holes before he dropped a shot with a bogey on the 13th. Four straight pars sent him to the 18th hole at one-under, but a double bogey on the final hole took him out of red figures.
"Both Mitchell and Mario played a solid round today," said Rice head coach Justin Emil. "The golf course doesn't give you much so anything at par or better can give them a chance. They both did a great job of managing their game around it."
Texas A&M's Chandler Phillips and Brandon Smith and Cooper Dossey of Baylor lead the regional at four-under par. There is a three-way tie for fourth at three-under par.
The second round begins tomorrow with the duo teeing off from hole No. 1. Meissner will be paired with Northern Colorado's Andrew Romano and Marquette's Hunter Eichhorn and will tee off at 9:31 a.m. Carmona will be paired with Northern Colorado's Coby Welch and McNeese State's Blake Elliott and will tee off at 9:53 a.m.
