TEXARKANA, Ark. - Rice will look to improve on its 11th-place standing following the first round of the Conference USA Golf Championship on Sunday. The tournament continues through Tuesday at Texarkana Country Club.

Rice shot a 309 team score on Sunday.

"We played pretty well on the front, but on the back side we caught the worst of the wind and it cost us a lot of shots down the stretch," said Rice coach Justin Emil. "I saw good shots from everyone out there today."

Rice was led by sophomore Jeff Wibawa who fired a two-over par 74 and is tied for 26th after 18 holes of play. Freshman Tommy Economou shot a 76 and is tied for 36th.

With a pair of players carding two of the top performances of the day, Memphis took an early two-stroke lead over second-place SMU on day one of the championship.

Memphis seniors Jack Belote and reigning medalist Jonathan Fly finished the day four-under and three-under, respectively.

SMU senior Max Buckley is tied atop the leaderboard with Belote after a 68 to pace the Mustangs.
