TEXARKANA, Ark. – Rice University men’s golf opened the 2013 Conference USA Championship with a solid 298 (+10) to tie for 10th with East Carolina in Sunday’s opening round at Texarkana Country Club.
Landon Michelson stood out on the opening day with a 70 (-2) to tie for sixth among individuals. The junior carded six birdies and eight pars on the day to pace the Owls through 18 holes.
Head coach Justin Emil noted, “The guys hung in there after a few mid-round mistakes. I was very proud to see Landon close out with three birdies down the stretch. There is a ton of golf left and a lot of birdies out there.”
Sophomore Tommy Economou followed with a 74 (+2) with par or better on 12 holes. He is tied for 28th overall at the event.
Brock Wilson and Joe Beck III are just behind in 47th place as each tallied a 77 (+5) on Sunday. Wilson, the squad’s lone senior, holed 10 pars and a pair of birdies, while Beck added a pair of birdies and played his second nine holes of the day at even-par.
