Men's Golf Stands 10th at C-USA Tourney
Michelson leads the Owls in sixth place

TEXARKANA, Ark. – Rice University men’s golf opened the 2013 Conference USA Championship with a solid 298 (+10) to tie for 10th with East Carolina in Sunday’s opening round at Texarkana Country Club.
Landon Michelson stood out on the opening day with a 70 (-2) to tie for sixth among individuals. The junior carded six birdies and eight pars on the day to pace the Owls through 18 holes.
Head coach Justin Emil noted, “The guys hung in there after a few mid-round mistakes. I was very proud to see Landon close out with three birdies down the stretch. There is a ton of golf left and a lot of birdies out there.”
Sophomore Tommy Economou followed with a 74 (+2) with par or better on 12 holes. He is tied for 28th overall at the event.
Brock Wilson and Joe Beck III are just behind in 47th place as each tallied a 77 (+5) on Sunday. Wilson, the squad’s lone senior, holed 10 pars and a pair of birdies, while Beck added a pair of birdies and played his second nine holes of the day at even-par.
In his first C-USA Tournament, freshman James Lee scored an 80 (+8) in the first round. He carded 10 pars and a birdie.
SMU leads the field with a 278 (-10), seven strokes ahead of second-place UCF. SMU’s Mario Clemens and Bryson Dechambeau are tied with two other players in first place at 68 (-4).
Rice and ECU are just one stroke behind ninth place Tulsa, two back of eighth-place UAB and well within striking distance of the top-five, currently held by Memphis at 291 (+3).
Monday’s second round tees off at 8:30 a.m. as the Owls start on Hole 10.
