WEST POINT, Miss. - In the final action leading up to this month's Conference USA Championship, Rice University men's golf placed 13th at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship with a 302-303-308--913 (+49).
Landon Michelson improved each round to lead the Owls with a 78-76-75--229 (+13), good for 44th place. The junior notched five birdies at the event and notched a string of 10-straight holes of par or better in Tuesday's final round.
Classmate Jeff Wibawa followed closely behind in 52nd place with a 72-80-78--230 (+14). The team's stroke average leader notched nine birdies over 54 holes and his opening round score tied for Rice's lowest of the week.
Tommy Economou led the Owls with nine birdies and wrapped up play just one stroke behind Wibawa. The sophomore carded a 78-81-72-231 (+15) to land in a tie for 56th place with Brock Wilson. The senior carried Rice through Monday's two rounds and finished with a 74-73-84--231 (+15).
Freshman James Lee rounded out the group with a 79-74-83--236 (+20), good for 68th place. The rookie sank nine birdies at the event.
Competing individually, Joe Beck III took home 72nd place with a 81-83-76--240 (+24). All four of his birdies came in Tuesday's final round as he took seven strokes off his late Monday score.
In a tiebreak, Mississippi State defeated UAB to claim the team title. Both teams carded a three-over-par 867 at the event at Old Waverly Golf Club.
Cincinnati's Emerson Newsome claimed the individual medal with a six-under par 67-71-72--210. He finished one stroke ahead of a pair of Blazers, Wilson McDonald and Thomas Sutton.
Rice returns to action on April 21-23 to compete for the Conference USA Championship in Texarkana, Ark. at the Texarkana Country Club.
