FRANKLIN, Tenn. - In the final tune-up before this month's Conference USA Championship, Rice University men's golf took home 12th place at the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club on Sunday. The Owls carded a 309-395-398--902 (+50) on the 7,100-yard par-71 course.
Freshman Kevin Reilly rode early momentum to lead the Owls to the finish with a 73-74-71--218 (+5). He placed 22nd overall and knocked in four of his seven birdies in the final round.
James Lee followed in 29th with a 75-71-74--220 (+7). The sophomore holed six birdies over 54 holes including two back-to-back on Sunday.
Tommy Economou and Landon Michelson followed in a tie for 64th place. Economou notched an 80-76-76--232 (+19) with a pair of birdies while his senior teammate carded an 81-74-77--232 (+19) with two of Michelson's four birdies coming in the final round.
Rookie Alex Levy finished with an 81-77-78--236 (+23) to place 73rd. He carded one birdie in each of the first two rounds before knocking in 12 pars in the final round, including seven-straight.
No. 1 ranked Alabama came back from a two-stroke deficit after the second round to claim the team title with an 847 (-5), nine strokes ahead of No. 14 Vanderbilt, which also hosted the event.
Rice tied with Ball State, just five strokes back of 11th-place Southern Miss and seven ahead of Western Kentucky.
Florida State's Jack Maguire won the individual medal at 203 (-10), after carding consecutive 66s in the second and third rounds. He finished seven strokes ahead of a pair tied for second.
Rice turns its attention to the C-USA Championship at Oak Tree Country Club on April 27-29 in Edmond, Okla.
