Dallas, Texas — Rice holds a five-shot lead after the first round of the ORU/SFA Spring Break Challenge, played at the par-71, 6,791-yard TPC Four Seasons.
The Owls opened the tournament with a one-over par 285. Conference USA foe North Texas, Cal State-Fullerton and Illinois State are all tied for second-place at six-over par.
“The guys did a great job of executing their game plan today,” said head coach Justin Emil. “The golf course is playing difficult with a cold North wind and difficult hole locations. That’s what we expected and planned for today.”
Senior Mario Carmona is in second-place after firing a three-under par 68. It is his 14th round of par or better this year and the 43rd of his career. It is also his fourth round this season in the 60’s and the 11th of his career.
The Houston native opened the round with a double-bogey, but responded with five birdies in the next 17 holes.
Senior Mitchell Meissner is tied for fifth-place at one-under par after carding a 70. It is his 11th round of par or better this year and the 32nd of his career.
Sophomore Nicholas Duggan posted a two-over 73 to sit in a 19th-place tie while freshmen Rishi Kejriwal and Jake Benson are tied for 28th and 55th-place, respectively. Kejriwal posted a 74 while Benson carded a 78.
The second round begins tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. CT. Rice will begin play at 12:40 p.m. and be paired with student-athletes from North Texas and Illinois State, teeing off from hole one.
