BANDON, Ore. – Rice University men’s golf finished strong at the Bandon Dunes Championship on Tuesday to move up to eighth place at 292-298-292—882 (+30). The 54-hole event was held at the par-71 Pacific Dunes Course.
Tommy Economou was the Owls’ star in the third round as the junior claimed seventh place at 72-74-71—217 (+4). Four of the junior’s 11 birdies came on Tuesday as he came within one stroke of his career-best round. It was his best finish of the season and second in the top 20 of an event.
Landon Michelson put together yet another solid round to claim 12th place at 74-71-73—218 (+5), just on Economou’s heels. Michelson carded eight birdies at the tournament, including five on Monday and two in the final round.
Rookie Kevin Reilly played three consistent rounds to finish 25th overall at 74-73-74—221 (+8). Five of his nine birdies came in the second round, with two each in the first and third rounds.
James Lee carded a 73-80-73—226 (+13), tying for 42nd. After holing just one birdie in each of the first two rounds, the sophomore sank four on Tuesday to match his opening round score of 73.
Joe Beck III rounded out the squad with a 78-80-79—237 (+24) to tie for 73rd. He notched four birdies at the event, including two in the opening round.
Oregon native Trey Johnson competed as an individual and tied for 76th at 75-86-78—239 (+26). He shook off a difficult second round on Monday to knock down three birdies over the final 18 holes.
Missouri led wire-to-wire and claimed the team title at 863 (+11), two strokes ahead of UC Davis. Rice placed eight strokes ahead of ninth-place Oregon, which entered the event ranked 39th nationally.
Washington’s Jonathan Sanders earned the individual medal at 210 (-3), one stroke ahead of UC Davis’ Matt Hansen.
The Owls return to action on March 24-25 at the Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio.
