BANDON, Ore. - Heading into the final round of the Bandon Dunes Championship, Rice University men's golf finds itself well-positioned for a strong finish. Through 36 holes, the Owls rank ninth at 292-298--590 (+22), with sixth place just four strokes away.
Senior Landon Michelson made a big move on Monday, landing in a tie for ninth place with a 73-71--144 (+2). He sank five birdies in the round to tie for the team lead on the day.
Tommy Economou continued his string of solid play with a 72-74--146 (+4) to tie for 23rd. He carded 10 pars and four birdies in the round.
Freshman Kevin Reilly also notched five birdies in the second round and improved to 27th place with a 74-73--147 (+5).
James Lee slipped from Sunday's opening round with a 73-80-153 (+11) but managed nine pars and a birdie on Monday to finish the day in 53rd place.
Joe Beck III posted a similar round on Monday to his opener with nine pars and a birdie. He stands in 74th place with an 80-78--157 (+16).
Individually, Trey Johnson moved to 78th place with a 75-86-161 (+19). The Oregon native holed eight pars and a birdie in the second round.
Missouri widened its lead to 13 strokes at 565 (-3), ahead of second-place Utah Valley. UC Davis lurks in third, just two more strokes back.
The Owls trail San Jose State by just two swings and both No. 39 Oregon and St. Mary's (Calif.) by two more. Rice has an eight-stroke cushion on 10th-place Boston College.
Washington's Jonathan Sanders holds the individual lead at 138 (-4), one stroke ahead of Missouri's Emilio Cuartero.
The tournament concludes on Tuesday with the final 18 holes.
