Economou Leads Owls in Bandon Dunes Opening Round

BANDON, Ore. – Rice University men’s golf got off to a strong start to the Bandon Dunes Championship on Sunday with a team score of 292 (+8) to tie for seventh in the 15-team field. The tournament is being played on the par-71 Pacific Dunes Course.

Junior Tommy Economou led the team with a 72 (+1) on the day, tying him for 15th place. He started the day with a double bogey on his second hole in the round, but acquitted himself nicely with consecutive birdies just three holes later. He added the final two of his team-leading four birdies late in the round.

James Lee and Landon Michelson followed closely behind, tied for 27th, each with a 73 (+2). Both players recorded one birdie in their respective rounds.

Freshman Kevin Reilly ended the day just one stroke back of the teammates with a 74 (+2), tying him for 40th. The rookie’s birdies came on the 11th and 12 holes in the opening round.

Joe Beck III stands tied for 67th place with a 78 (+7) through 18 holes. He holed two birdies, on the par-4 ninth and par-3 11th.

Competing individually, Oregon native Trey Johnson fired a 75 (+4) on Sunday to stand tied for 46th. The sophomore matched Economou’s total of four birdies.

With 36 holes remaining over the next two days, Missouri leads the field with a 281 (-3), one stroke ahead of Utah Valley. No. 48 Colorado stands in third at 286 (+2), two strokes ahead of Washington State and three up on No. 39 Oregon.

The Owls are tied with UC Davis, one stroke ahead of San Jose State and No. 16 Washington. Host Gonzaga ranks 12th.

Three players share the individual lead at 67 (-4). Mizzou’s Emilio Cuartero, Gonzaga’s Peter Gullickson and Utah Valley’s J.T. Timmons rank one stroke ahead of a foursome tied in fourth.

Round two tees off on Monday morning with an 8:30 a.m. PDT shotgun start. The Owls open on the first through fourth holes. Johnson opens on the 18th hole.
