Cabo, Mexico — A pair of Owls are in the top ten after the first round of the Querencia Cabo Intercollegiate, played at the par-71, 6,898-yard Los Cabos Querencia.

Freshman Jake Benson is tied for third-place at three-under par and senior Mitchell Meissner is tied for eighth-place at one-under par. Benson fired a career-low 68, his third straight round of par or better and the fourth of his short career. Meissner carded a 71, his seventh round of par or better this year and the 30th of his career.

Benson recorded four birdies on the day to just one bogey. Meissner posted three birdies and two bogeys.

Rice shot a four-over par 288. No. 1 Oklahoma State leads the tournament at eight-under par, five strokes in front of No. 13 California. Oklahoma State’s Matthew Wolff leads the individual tournament at six-under par, one stroke in front of Cal’s Colin Morikawa.

“The golf course was set up very difficult today and the guys handled it very well,” said head coach Justin Emil. “We did a good job of playing the golf course today and not the field. That’s our focus this week.”

Senior Mario Carmona three-over par and tied for 41st-place after posting a 74. Junior Grant Rogers opened with a 76 to sit in a tie for 59th-place at five-over par and freshman Rishi Kejriwal is tied for 61st-place at six-over par after carding a 77.

The second round begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT. Rice will be paired with student-athletes from Oklahoma State, Houston and No. 20 Florida State, teeing off from holes five through nine.
