CHOUDRANT, La. - Battling a strong field and tough weather throughout the two-day tournament, Rice University men's golf claimed 10th place at the weather-shortened Argent Financial Classic on Tuesday with a 320-304--624 (+48). The Owls tied with Arkansas-Little Rock.
Freshman Kevin Reilly led the Owls in 20th place with a 79-71--150 (+6), including two of the tournament's five eagles. He added three birdies in each round as well.
Tommy Economou followed with a 79-77-156 (+12) to place 41st. The junior holed a pair of birdies in each round.
Sophomore James Lee put together a solid round on Tuesday after Monday's slow start to move up to a tie for 52nd place with an 83-76--159 (+15). He doubled his birdie total from the first round and sank 11 of his 18 pars in the final round as well.
Alex Levy tied his teammate in 52nd, notching a 79-80--159 (+15). The rookie carded two of his three birdies in the opening round but fired 11 pars in the finale.
Landon Michelson added an 87-80--167 (+23) to round out the group in a tie for 70th place. The senior played a much more consistent round on Tuesday after a rocky start to the event, including a birdie on the par-four fourth hole.
Competing individually, Joe Beck III carried over momentum from his solid opening round on Monday to finish in 38th place with a 76-79--155 (+11). The senior holed one birdie in each round and finished second among the individual players.
North Texas snuck past host and Conference USA rival Louisiana Tech for the team title with a 586 (+10) by two strokes. New Orleans took ninth, just four strokes ahead of the Owls.
Central Arkansas' Pep Angles claimed the individual medal with a 70-72--142 (-2), one stroke ahead of Sam Houston State's Albert Miner.
The Owls head west for the Bandon Dunes Championship on March 9-11 in Bandon, Ore.
