HUMBLE, Texas - Opening at the back-nine holes on Saturday morning gave Rice University men's golf an opportunity to challenge the arguably hardest section of the tournament course at Redstone Golf Club. The Owls responded with a 301 (+13) to add to Friday's 309 to give the squad a 610 (+34) to remain in 15th place.
Head coach Justin Emil noted after the round, “We got off to another really good start, but you have to close the deal and we didn’t get it done today with prime scoring conditions.”
James Lee again led Rice with a two-over 74 on Saturday. The freshman notched six pars and a birdie on each of the nine holes to finish the day at 76-74--150 (+6) with 18 holes remaining in the tournament. He improved to 54th place overall.
Landon Michelson stepped up his play on Saturday, improving two strokes from his opening round 77. The junior ended the day in 62nd place with a 77-75--152 (+8). His four birdies on the day marked the most by any Rice player.
Brock Wilson improved three strokes from Friday to Saturday as he used 14 pars to even out with a 78-75--153 (+9) through 36 holes to rank 68th in the elite field.
Junior Jeff Wibawa fired two birdies in the second round to finish the day with a 78-77--155 (+11), good for 74th place.
Joe Beck III started the round two strokes under par through seven holes before running into trouble after the turn. He finished the day at 82-84--166 (+22) to stand in 85th.
Sunday's final round begins at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. The Owls open the day spanning holes 14 through 18.
