Men's Golf in Solid Position at Rice Intercollegiate

Jeff Wibawa carded a season-best 67 in the second round to tie for the tournament lead.

HOUSTON, Texas – Jeff Wibawa paced Rice University men’s golf on the first day of the Rice Intercollegiate at Westwood Golf Club as the Owls finished the first day of the spring opener in third place at 290-290—580 (+4). The junior is tied for the individual lead after carding a season-best 67 in the second round.

Wibawa carded a two-under 70 in the opening round and followed with a second-round 67 to help the squad rank as high as second for large portions of the day. The junior ended the 36-hole afternoon tied for first place at 70-67­—137 (-7).

Head coach Justin Emil recapped the day, saying, “We played well today.  I thought we had our struggles, but played through them. We did a good job not getting frustrated.”

Newcomer James Lee added a 71-75—146 (+2) to place in a tie for 18th. Brock Wilson followed close behind in 24th place at 74-73—147 (+3).

Joe Beck III added a 75-77—152 (+8) to stand in 48th through two rounds and Tommy Economou rounded out the squad with an 81-75—156 (+12).

Competing individually, Landon Michelson fired 75-72—147 (+3) to tie in 24th, James Ragan carded a 41st place 77-73—150 (+6) and Trey Johnson improved in the second round with a 77-76—153 (+9) to tie in 52nd.

Florida Atlantic benefitted from three players landing in the top 10 to jump out to a five-stroke lead over UTSA at 572 (-4). FAU’s Richard Donegan tied a tournament record with a 66 in the second round to tie Wibawa in the lead.

Houston Baptist trails Rice by six strokes in fourth place, while Missouri State ranks fifth with a 588 (+12).

The final round tees off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
